Complication Clinics

All you need to know

What is a complication clinic?

What is a complication clinic?

A complication clinic assesses and manages problems following aesthetic treatment. That includes medical complications and unwanted cosmetic results. A problem does not have to be dangerous to deserve attention. Visible lumps, overfilling or swelling around the eyes can affect how you feel about your face every day.

The first task is to understand what is causing the problem. Different conditions can look similar, and further treatment without a clear assessment may make things harder to manage. We review your treatment history, examine the affected area when you attend in person and use ultrasound where it will help. From there, Dr MJ can explain what is likely to help and what the limitations are.

Who we help

Our clinic is inclusive and welcomes anyone who needs help with an aesthetic complication, regardless of background, gender or where they were treated. Everyone deserves to be heard and treated with respect.

We assess concerns including tear trough swelling and puffiness, misplaced or migrated filler, overfilled lips or faces, uneven results, lumps and nodules, and persistent or recurring inflammation. We also see patients with complications from fillers that cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase.

We assess and manage urgent complications, including vascular adverse events and infection. We accept both patient self-referrals and referrals from treating practitioners for these problems. Contact the clinic directly on 0151 236 5166 for urgent help.

You can come to us if your original practitioner cannot help, if previous treatment has not resolved the problem, or if you want an independent opinion. It is also fine to book when you are simply unsure whether what you are experiencing is normal.

Why patients and clinicians come to Dr MJ

Why patients and clinicians come to Dr MJ

She teaches facial ultrasound and complication management internationally and is a member of CMAC Global Faculty. Her experience combines the assessment of complex filler problems with ultrasound-guided interventions. That expertise includes knowing when treatment is appropriate and when further investigation or a different specialist is needed. Follow @drmjclinic on instagram

Referrals from other practitioners

Referrals from other practitioners

Clinicians can refer patients to Dr MJ for assessment and management of aesthetic complications. Please contact the clinic on 0151 236 5166 or at [email protected] to arrange the referral.

With the patient’s consent, a treatment history, product details, clinical photographs and a summary of any management so far will help us assess the concern.

Patients can also book their own consultation while their practitioner supplies the relevant records. A referral is welcome, but it is not a requirement for access to the clinic.

What happens next

1 Start with a consultation

This is your opportunity to be heard. Dr MJ will discuss the original treatment, when the problem began, how it has changed and what you have already tried. You can ask questions and explain what you want help with. An advice consultation does not include ultrasound or treatment.

2 Have an assessment with ultrasound if needed

An in-person ultrasound appointment includes consultation, scanning of the booked area or areas and a treatment plan. Ultrasound can help locate filler and assess its relationship to the surrounding tissues. It is a diagnostic tool; the scan itself does not remove filler or treat the complication. These assessment appointments do not include corrective treatment.

3 Decide on treatment with a clear plan

Dr MJ will explain the recommended approach, its risks and likely limitations. This may involve dissolving suitable filler, another form of management, further investigations or referral. Treatment is arranged separately following assessment. Some problems need several sessions. We cannot guarantee that every complication can be completely resolved.

4 Review progress

Further assessment or treatment may be needed as the area settles. The priority is to manage the complication before considering any new aesthetic treatment.
