A filler complication is a problem following dermal filler treatment. It may affect your health, the way your face looks or how the treated area feels. Some complications need urgent treatment. Others develop gradually, or leave you with a result you are unhappy with long after the initial swelling has settled.
At Dr MJ Clinic, we assess and manage both urgent filler complications and unwanted aesthetic results. You can refer yourself directly, or your practitioner can refer you. You do not need to know what is wrong before asking for help.
Bruising, tenderness and some swelling can occur after filler. These effects should settle as the area recovers, although the timing varies with the treatment and the individual.
A new, worsening, persistent or recurring problem needs assessment. Photographs alone cannot always establish the cause, and a painless lump is not necessarily the same problem as a painful, inflamed one.

We accept urgent patient self-referrals and practitioner referrals, including vascular adverse events and infection. Contact the clinic directly on 0151 236 5166 about an urgent complication rather than using a routine consultation booking.
A vascular occlusion occurs when filler obstructs blood flow in a vessel. The affected tissue may not receive enough oxygen, which can lead to skin damage and tissue loss. Pain and changes in skin colour can be warning signs, but the presentation varies. Prompt assessment and treatment matter. Dr MJ assesses and manages these events, including patients treated at other clinics.
Infection can cause redness, warmth, pain and swelling, sometimes with an abscess or discharge. It can occur shortly after treatment or present later. Some inflammatory reactions look similar, so assessment is needed to establish the likely cause and choose appropriate treatment. We see and manage these complications; they should not be treated as routine cosmetic dissatisfaction.
Rarely, filler can obstruct the blood supply to the eye and cause loss of vision. Sudden blurred vision, loss of vision or other new visual symptoms following filler require immediate emergency hospital assessment. Call 999 or attend A&E immediately. This is a distinct emergency that needs ophthalmic care; do not delay by booking a routine clinic appointment.
A problem can be non-urgent and still have a considerable effect on your confidence. We welcome anyone who needs help, without judgement about where they were treated or the choices they made.
You may feel that your lips or face look too full, uneven or different from what you intended. Too much filler, unsuitable placement or a treatment that does not suit your anatomy can all contribute. Assessment helps distinguish excess filler from swelling or changes in the underlying tissues before deciding whether correction is appropriate.
A lump may be visible, felt beneath the skin or noticeable only when you move your face. It may represent a deposit of filler, but nodules can also arise from inflammation or infection. A nodule describes a lump; it does not tell us its cause. New pain, redness or swelling can change how urgently it needs assessment.
Swelling that persists beyond recovery, returns repeatedly or develops months after treatment needs an explanation. Under-eye filler can contribute to puffiness and swelling over the upper cheeks. Other causes include inflammatory reactions or infection. Dr MJ will assess the history and the affected area rather than assume that every swelling needs dissolving.
Filler may be placed in an unsuitable tissue layer or be found beyond the area it was intended to treat. This can create ridges, bulges or an altered facial contour. Ultrasound can help locate deposits and clarify their position, but their presence alone does not prove they are causing every symptom.
Superficial filler can sometimes cause a blue-grey appearance, particularly beneath the eyes. This is often called the Tyndall effect. A longstanding colour change is different from a sudden change after injection, which may indicate a vascular problem and needs urgent assessment.
For a non-urgent concern, a complication consultation is the place to start. It gives you time to explain what has happened, what you have already tried and what worries you. Dr MJ has assessed and treated thousands of aesthetic complications over years of clinical practice and teaches complication management and facial ultrasound internationally.
If you live far from Liverpool, an online consultation may be the most useful first step. It allows a discussion of your concerns and options, but an in-person appointment is needed for examination, ultrasound or treatment. Assessment comes before choosing a treatment: hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, while other filler materials require a different approach.
